A very San Francisco weekend

...involves fleeing the claustrophobia prompted by the Outside Lands Music Festival and doing a little bit of reconnaissance and photosurvey on the north side of the Bay, beginning with the Sausalito Yacht Harbor.

Part II of my little mission was to head west from Sausalito toward a place called Fort Barry, a remnant of the age when we had to be concerned with the enemy approaching our ports by water.  Today, the concrete gun platforms serve as little more than canvases for aerosol-based paint, and the bunkers camouflaged beneath sod roofs feel give the feeling of a 1940's time capsule.

From the decommissioned zone (now home to the Marin Center For The Arts - somewhat ironically, I feel) it is a short hike down a hill, through a tunnel, and across a pedestrian bridge to a defiant rock outcropping that is home to the Point Bonita Lighthouse.

The lighthouse is accessed by a second foot bridge.  According to the most reputable information I can find, the Point Bonita lighthouse is the only such structure in the U.S. that is approached by a suspension bridge.

Alas - the bridge was closed for repairs (as the barricades subtly imply) and so the lighthouse was unreachable on this day.

And that, as they say, was that.

Thanks to an exceptionally Comcastic internet signal at my dwelling the last few days, I haven't been able to post this until Tuesday evening.  But, honest, the travels happened this weekend.
