A Sudden Shower

Late one night I headed west
Having spent the evening as a guest
And now on foot at such an hour
The violence of the sudden shower
Informed me I was underdressed

Without more knowing preparation
The weather forced my navigation
I didn't think when day was dawning
I'd refuge not under roof but awning
And give it my appreciation

Yet squalls, being squalls, do not concede
To the schedule I have want to lead
Whether in life or in the city
What could be a bigger pity
Than the storm I see but cannot read

For now, the lamps at window glass
Looked warm but they did not amass
To warmth withheld by the sun so shy
I pondered all these things as I
Waited for the evening rain to pass
