On past trips I've cut over to Highway 1 immediately after crossing the bridge, but this time I drove up to San Rafael, and then on through Fairfax and Samuel Taylor State Park (previously encountered here).
In between pleasant little communities that sidle right up to the bay (e.g. Marshall, CA, population: 50), there are staccato autumnal flashes framed by undulating hills and sparkling water.
